Ten Forward Income and Expense Report November 2023

This is Ten Forward’s income and expense report for November 2023 which as usual means that all of these values are what happened in October 2023.

So without further ado, let’s get into it.

Palestine, Antisemitism, and the Fediverse

Over the last couple weeks as the genocide in Palestine unfolds before our very eyes I have been thinking about writing this post. I have hesitated and even as I write these words I feel like I should not be writing this post.

This is because the most basic of support for the Palestinian cause and the mildest of criticism of the state of Israel can result in accusations of antisemitism being thrown around as a way to silence legitimate criticism of the oppression Palestinian people face on a daily basis.

My hesitation aside, as a moderator of a fediverse instance, the topic of antisemitism falls well within my purview and as such I think it is important to talk about how we moderate antisemitism on the fediverse. To educate myself on the nuances of antisemitism both contemporary and historical and from a multitude of perspectives I read On Antisemitism: Solidarity and the Struggle for Justice, a collection of essays from a variety of authors which include both Jewish and non-Jewish authors alike.

A Guide to Moderating in the Fediverse: The Basics

This is a republishing of a post I wrote for my personal blog back in November 2022. I am republishing this here so it can be shared from my admin fediverse account and therefore have a larger audience.

So you have decided to run a instance on the fediverse. Welcome! But also I’m so sorry.

Jokes aside this post is intended to be a guide to the basic principles I keep at the back of my head while moderating Ten Forward since 2017.

I have been meaning to write a post like this ever since the November 2022 wave of new users and fediverse admins started happening. Now more than ever there is a new wave of admins and moderators who may be completely new to moderating a social space where they do not personally know the people in it.

Yep, that means this guide is targeted towards multi-user instance administrators and moderators. Single-user instance folks, some of this stuff may apply to you but this isn’t meant for you!

So before we get into the details, I am going to break down this guide into a few key points:

  • Separation of concerns
  • Proactive vs Reactive moderation
  • Transparency. Accountability, and Responsibility

I intend to keep this post at a 101 high level overview level. Some of the things I mention can be entire topics of blog posts on their own and I may write more about specifics later but for now we stick to the basics.

Ten Forward Income and Expense Report June 2023

As promised in the Future Forward post, here is our very first income and expense report.

One important note about these reports, all the income and expenses happen in the previous month from when they are reported. So for example, in this report, all of the income and expenses incurred happened in May.

Introducing the Ten Forward Savings Fund

In the Future Forward post, I referenced what I tentatively called the Ten Forward Savings Fund. I am going to go ahead and make that an actual thing.

The Ten Forward Savings Fund or TFSF for short is a savings account for the Ten Forward project that is in essence what is usually referred to as a “rainy day” fund.

Future Forward

When I first started Ten Forward back in April 2017 I didn’t think I would end up running it for more than a year, two at the most. Very few of my attempts at building communities truly succeed long term. In fact, the only other one that succeeded is EntropyNet which is a small IRC network I started with a couple friends in 2011 and is still going strong.

Ten Forward is of course an entirely different type of social network from what IRC offers and the requirements of maintaining a Mastodon instance are significantly more resource intensive than running a IRC network.

With the six year anniversary of Ten Forward’s creation still in the rear view mirror the fundamental question that has been on my mind is – “what do the next five years of Ten Forward look like?”

Let’s get into it.
